The rise of Anti-Asian racism in Canada

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, anti-Asian racism has drastically affected North America and especially its major cities. Many Asian Canadians acknowledge feeling unsafe while police departments from all around the country report the enormous and disturbing rise in the numbers of hate crimes against people of East Asian descent. The research conducted by the University of Toronto highlights the fact that although Asian-Canadians had been facing racism since before the pandemic started, the numbers of racist incidents more than tripled over the last year.

According to the report of the Chinese Canadian National Council’s Toronto, there have been over a thousand cases of anti-Asian racism since the beginning of the year, while 11% percent of them involved physical abuse. The published study by the Anti-Defamation League has also discovered a pattern that connects the massive rise of anti-Asian racism online to the rhetoric of certain politicians since the beginning of the pandemic.

As a response to the growing cruelty, there have been marches across North America; according to the protestors, it is simply impossible to stay silent.
